Book Review : Hacking the Human Mind by Richard Shotton and MichaelAaron Flicker.
There are two kinds of books on marketing.
The first promise to make known “the secret” for influencing customers.
The second point is to explain that neither your customers nor you were ever making completely rational decisions from the start.
The book Hacking the Human Mind should definitely be placed in that second category.
This book, written by Richard Shotton and MichaelAaron Flicker, is a 2025 release and continues Shotton’s aim of making behavioural science both accessible and actually useful for marketers.
If you’re familiar with Richard Shotton’s name then there’s a valid explanation for that. I have already looked at two of his earlier good books, The Choice Factory (2018) and The Illusion of Choice (2023), which you can also see here on The Overthinker’s Guide to Modern Marketing.
Fortunately, this most recent book carries on the tradition.
The Big Idea (Spoiler: You’re Not Nearly as Rational as You Think)
At its core the book Hacking the Human Mind looks at the various psychological forces that influence the decisions we make every day.
Instead of concentrating on marketing techniques, the authors explain the reasons for people’s behaviour, using insights from behavioural science, cognitive psychology, and years of academic research.
What results is a fascinating examination of the unconscious biases that subtly affect everything from purchasing decisions to first impressions.
That is why you have probably recently bought something that, at the time, seemed like a good idea.
Behavioural Science Without the Headache
A major strength of the pair is the way they can make in-depth research seem easy to understand.
The book has no sensation of being an academic textbook.
Rather, the concepts are made clear by means of interesting stories, memorable experiments, and practical examples so that the science is easy to understand and even easier to remember.
You don’t need a degree in psychology.
No more than a simple curiosity as to why humans feel the need to act humanly.
More Than Just a Marketing Book
While marketers will discover plenty to enjoy, Hacking the Human Mind goes well beyond advertising and branding.
The same insights can be applied to leadership, sales, customer experience, product design, negotiation, and everyday communication.
Anyone who has to work with people, though this applies to most of us, will discover something of value in this book, and that may well be its greatest strength.
It’s not just a matter of enhancing marketing.
It’s about improving understanding.
Why It Feels So Relevant
Now, in an age when AI is able to produce vast amounts of content and automation has become the standard, an understanding of human psychology is more important than ever.
Technology can help achieve faster communication.
Behavioural science enables us to communicate more effectively.
The authors remind us that while tools continue to evolve at remarkable speed, the human brain remains wonderfully consistent in its shortcuts, biases, and irrational habits.
That is reassuring and at times a bit embarrassing.
The Overthinker’s Verdict
I was very pleased with this book since I had high expectations of it having thoroughly enjoyed The Choice Factory and The Illusion of Choice.
Hacking the Human Mind is a natural extension of Shotton’s previous work and includes new research as well as different perspectives which seem directly relevant to contemporary marketing and business.
It should be included on your reading list.
The Quiet Takeaway
The biggest competitive advantage in marketing is likely not a new platform, a more intelligent algorithm, or yet another AI tool.
It’s understanding people.
We are reminded by Hacking the Human Mind that successful marketing has always been based on human behaviour, not on technology.
The channels may change.
The psychology rarely does.
