Book Review : Alchemy by Rory Sutherland.
There’s a comforting belief in marketing that people are rational. That given the right information, presented clearly enough, they will make sensible decisions.
Alchemy by Rory Sutherland exists to gently, brilliantly, and repeatedly destroy that belief.
The Big Idea (Spoiler: Logic Is Overrated)
Sutherland’s central argument is both simple and slightly chaotic: people don’t think the way we think they think.
Which is inconvenient if your entire marketing strategy is built on logic, data, and the assumption that customers behave like mildly obedient spreadsheets.
Instead, Alchemy makes the case that human behaviour is gloriously irrational, and that the real magic in marketing comes from understanding (and embracing) that irrationality. Or, put another way: the problem isn’t your product – it’s your assumption that people make decisions sensibly.
Why This Book Became a Cult Favourite
Since its release in 2019, Alchemy has quietly become a must-read among marketers across the world and it’s not hard to see why.
It doesn’t give you frameworks or funnels. It gives you permission to think differently.
Sutherland pulls from psychology, behavioural economics, and real-world case studies to show that small, seemingly illogical changes can have outsized effects. Change the perception, not the product. Reframe the problem, not the price.
It’s the kind of thinking that makes you pause mid-sentence and go, “…that shouldn’t work.” And then realise it absolutely does.
A Personal Note
This is a firm favourite of mine, and not in the “I read it once and highlighted a few bits” sense.
I’ve read Alchemy cover to cover several times, and each time it manages to feel both insightful and slightly mischievous. It doesn’t just challenge how you market, it challenges how you think.
Which is, frankly, more useful.
Even Better in Audio
It’s also worth mentioning the audiobook version, narrated by Sutherland himself, and it’s excellent.
There’s something about hearing these ideas delivered in his own voice, dry, thoughtful, and occasionally amused, that makes the whole experience even more engaging. It feels less like a lecture and more like being let in on a series of clever secrets.
The Overthinker’s Verdict
If you’ve ever relied on data to justify a decision that didn’t quite feel right, or assumed your audience would behave logically if you just explained things clearly enough, this book will quietly unravel those assumptions.
Alchemy doesn’t give you neat answers. It gives you better questions.
And occasionally, it suggests the obvious answer might be the wrong one.
One Last Thought
This isn’t a book about marketing tactics. It’s about how people really behave.
Which, as it turns out, is far more useful, and far less predictable.

Superb!
Alchemy by Rory Sutherland is a witty, thought-provoking challenge to the idea that consumers behave logically. A firm favourite and widely regarded as a must-read among marketers, it explores how irrational behaviour often drives the most effective marketing outcomes. Insightful, entertaining, and even more engaging as an audiobook narrated by Sutherland himself, it’s a book that rewards multiple reads and leaves you thinking differently each time.

This too is one of my favourite reads. He has a short audio series on BBC Sounds called “Marketing: Hacking the Unconscious” which is extremely good listening despite only being 15 minutes per episode. He should write another book soon!
Rory has to be one of my favourite marketing stars. I tune into every video and podcast he appears on – he just makes so much sense. I have ordered this title and cant wait to read it. Thank you for highlighting it!
